Tips for Literacy
Annual Fund Raising and Awareness Event
What a night!
The Greater Hartford Literacy Council held their second annual "Tips for Literacy" public awareness and fund raising event on March 31, 2005. Nearly $12,500 was raised during the Tips for Literacy event to support the Books at Home initiative of the Greater Hartford Literacy Council. In addition to raising funds, Kurt Simonds, Literacy Council Board President stated, "we are happy to report that the event also raised an extraordinary amount of good will and public awareness for literacy efforts in the region."
In 22 very busy restaurants around Greater Hartford, people came out to have dinner and support literacy. The servers in each of these restaurants donated 10% of their tips and the restaurant owners matched their contributions. Simultaneously, at 9 very special restaurants around the region, literacy supporters and fans of the Leaders for Literacy enjoyed specially prepared meals and delightful conversation. (The restaurants donated the dinners.) By all reports the food, wine and company were outstanding.
How it works
Originally initiated by restaurant servers, this event involves a commitment to participate from the food and beverage servers, managers, and owners of area restaurants. Restaurant servers donate 10 percent of their tips for one night and the restaurant owners match the funds raised by their employees to support literacy services in Greater Hartford.
This year, the Literacy Council also invited politicians, business leaders, and local sports and entertainment celebrities to participate as featured guests dining at participating restaurants during the event. The Literacy Council sold tickets in advance for dinner, wine and a seat at a "Leaders for Literacy" table for a $100 contribution.
Why Participate?
The event is a win-win for all: restaurants, servers, local celebrities, literacy and Greater Hartford families in need.
The Literacy Council raises awareness about literacy issues and the support of local celebrities and restaurants for this worthy cause. The event was well publicized by our media sponsors and through the Literacy Council's website and regional network of 3,000 people and programs. Restaurants and local celebrities were also encouraged to include the event in their own publicity efforts. Literacy was the topic of conversation in restaurants around the region.
The need is great. Studies show that as many as 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children. Your contribution supports our Books at Home initiative providing books and educational resources for nearly 30 literacy programs to distribute to children and families in need in Greater Hartford.
Donations are tax deductible. We are a nonprofit organization relying on the support of private donors to meet our expenses, in addition to government and grant support. We need your help to meet our goal of distributing 30,000 books to Greater Hartford children in need.
Supporting Literacy is as easy as A, B, C…
A) Dine out with friends, family, and co-workers at a participating restaurant during next year's event and show your support for literacy!
B) Dine with one of our Leaders for Literacy during next year's event.
C) Stay home, enjoy a book, and send your contribution to the Literacy Council.
We need your support to reach families in need:
$36 provides a child with a new book a month for a year
$50 sponsors guides for services and volunteers
$100 provides professional development for area programs
$500 supports the Literacy Clearinghouse and website
$1,000 sponsors monthly books for a classroom for a year
