Municipal Literacy Liaison Initiative

OVERVIEW
Overall goal:
For the Municipal Literacy Liaisons to be able to provide the best information for their town or city's residents in terms of literacy information, resources, service information and volunteer opportunities.
I. Purpose of the Municipal Literacy Liaison Initiative:
  • To help municipalities be more aware of what other towns in the region are doing;
  • To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and the building of partnerships to implement programs;
  • To help facilitate communication and avoid duplication;
  • To help access more resources as a regional area rather than as an individual town;
  • To give municipalities the opportunity to participate in, and impact the direction, of regional and collaborative efforts to raise literacy awareness, improve literacy skills, and enhance the quality of literacy services across the region.
II. Responsibilities of the Municipal Literacy Liaison
  • Be the point person between their town or city and the Literacy Council;
  • Be the point person for information sharing and literacy coordination across the towns of the region and with the Literacy Council;
  • Receive and disseminate literacy information;
  • Identify local literacy-related issues;
  • Connect with regional initiatives;
  • Facilitate their town or city's access to information and resources;
  • If not already involved in coordinated literacy efforts in their town or city, they should know who are the key players to direct information;
  • Convene quarterly to develop plans on how to best work together;
  • With the help of the Literacy Council, identify regional projects and participate in regional efforts.
III. Responsibilities of the Literacy Council
  • Coordinate the Municipal Literacy Liaison Initiative;
  • Provide opportunities for networking with liaisons from other towns or cities in the region;
  • Inform the process of enhancing literacy in each community by offering presentations containing literacy-related statistics and local data, providing each town with their own literacy/education profile;
  • Provide literacy information and resources;
  • Provide the Adult Basic Education Directory;
  • Provide the Funding Analysis and possible funding opportunities.
