About Books at Home and our local First Book program
Greater Hartford Literacy Council strives to provide services that support and build the capacity of our member literacy programs. In response to the need for books expressed by our membership, and growing evidence regarding the importance of having books in the home, the Literacy Council has developed an initiative we call Books at Home. Books at Home involves activities such as coordinating the region's First Book project and raising funds to provide free books for programs providing some type of literacy service to low-income children. The Greater Hartford Literacy Council is pleased to announce that we have raised $15,000 to support an allocation of First Book grants. We are currently accepting book grant applications and encourage literacy providers to review the guidelines and consider applying for a book grant. Programs receiving book grants will select the books from catalogs provided by First Book, within the dollar amount granted. (The discounted price per book is roughly $2.50.) The books will be delivered directly to the program throughout the grant year. The program will incorporate the books into program lessons and give them to the children every several weeks to take home and keep as their own.

About First Book
First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. In neighborhoods across the country, First Book Advisory Boards unite leaders from all sectors of the community to provide books to children living at or below the poverty line. In the past three years, First Book has distributed over 20 million new books to children in need in hundreds of communities nationwide.
