With limited funds and staffing, many of our member literacy programs are struggling to meet the growing demand for services. The Literacy Council strives to bring coordination that will support the efforts of literacy providers and maximize the resources available for local and regional literacy enhancement. Providing free books and other educational materials is one example of our efforts to assist programs by offering resources that they have neither the time nor the capacity to access on their own.

In response to the need for books expressed by our membership, growing evidence regarding the importance of having books in the home, and the great number of low income households in many cities and towns in the region, the Literacy Council has developed the Books at Home initiative. This new approach to our book-giving activities will significantly enhance our provision of educational resources and materials to literacy programs and their participants of all ages. By identifying new sources of free books, coordinating existing book drives and initiatives, and working closely with literacy programs and libraries in the area, Books at Home can have a significant impact on literacy enhancement for the neediest individuals and families.

The objectives of the Books at Home Initiative include:
  • Get books into the hands of children and families in need
  • Provide books for quality literacy programs
  • Provide books for motivational reading activities
  • Provide regional coordination
  • Provide technical assistance to community groups conducting book drives and program receiving book grants.
