Adult Literacy Workgroup
Overview
Formation of the Workgroup
Step One: A focus group of providers of adult literacy services was convened in June of 2004. To build upon the work that has already been undertaken, the group reviewed task force reports and survey results and developed suggestions for a framework to move the literacy enhancement agenda forward.
Step Two: The focus group recommended the formation of a workgroup to address a number of priority issues affecting the quality, availability, and funding of all types of literacy services for adults in Greater Hartford.
Products and Purpose
The Workgroup meetings will be results-oriented, with specific products or objectives guiding the work.
The topic of the meetings will relate to the development of quality standards for literacy services and address priority issues, such as:
- Services for undocumented learners
- Facilitating transition from literacy programs to training programs and vice versa
- Managing the needs of learners with varying skills
- Creating mutually agreed-upon standardized terms and assessment measures for more effective assessment of learner's achievements and facilitating transitions from one program to another
- Uniformity in curriculum
- Need for a public awareness campaign about literacy
- Advocacy for funding and services
- Volunteer recruitment and training
Players and Roles
This workgroup is convened by the Literacy Council, and comprised of community based organizations, state-funded programs, and other professionals working in the field of adult literacy services. Workgroup participants will provide input and help develop the strategies needed to effectively address the enhancement of literacy services for adults in Greater Hartford.
Meeting Schedule and Focus
It is expected that the workgroup will meet monthly during 2005. Meeting will be held at the Literacy Council office at One Union Place in Hartford unless otherwise specified. Once a topic is selected, it is expected that three meetings will be devoted to an identification of the issues and providing input to the development of standards for quality services relating to this topic. For a schedule of meetings, please visit our event calendar.
Individuals who express an interest, but are unable to attend the meetings will be kept informed and have an opportunity to comment via e-mail. To be placed on the adult literacy workgroup distribution list, contact us.
